Tencent launches it is establishing its first data centre region in Indonesia

Tencent Cloud, a subsidiary of technology conglomerate Tencent, has reportedly launched an internet data centre in Jakarta. According to The Jakarta Post, this is Tencent Cloud's first centre in Indonesia, as the company looks to capitalise on its growing cloud computing market. The internet data centre is said to allow faster data transfers and speed up various industries’ digital transformations. The Jakarta Post also cited Tencent Cloud's senior vice president Poshu Yeung, who said Indonesia has "a large internet demographic dividend with a fast-growing mobile internet market", and the company looks to maximise the cloud computing potential in the country.

Yeung predicts, in 2023, Indonesia will experience a cloud market growth with a figure of up to 800 million US dollars (around Rp. 11.7 trillion).

"Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world with the largest economy in Southeast Asia. We are very pleased to be able to launch our first IDC in Indonesia to help maximize the optimal potential of cloud computing in this country," Yeung said in a written statement received by KompasTekno, Wednesday ( 4/14/2021).

Furthermore, he explained that the Tencent Cloud data center is located in the business center of Jakarta. The establishment of the IDC Tencent Cloud will support the evolving needs of various industries, from financial services, internet and e-commerce, to entertainment, gaming and education.

Tencent operates 20 data centers located outside of China, some in Europe and the United States. But rising tensions between China and several western countries, Tencent plans to add 30 to 50 percent of its data centers in Asia.

The news comes a month after Microsoft said it is establishing its first data centre region in Indonesia to deliver trusted cloud services locally as well. This is under Microsoft's newly-launched Berdayakan Ekonomi Digital Indonesia (empowering Indonesia's digital economy) initiative. The data centre region will allow businesses to have faster access to Microsoft's cloud services and the ability for data to be stored in country. It is also equipped with "world-class data security and privacy", Microsoft added.

Due to its wide coverage, the data center can also incorporate Tencent Cloud's own border gateway protocol to cover the entire country.
