NFL 17 Oakland Radiers enjoyed a successful 2016 season

Many knew that heading into 2016 the Oakland Raiders had a lot of potential. However, no one could have predicted that their rise would be so soon. In just two seasons with Carr and head coach Jack Del Rio at the helm, the Raiders have gone from one of the worst to one of the best teams in the NFL. Despite having one of the worst defenses in the league, Carr led his team to 12 wins, the most wins the franchise has seen since Jon Gruden coached the team back in 2000. Only an untimely and unfortunate injury would end Carr's MVP caliber season and stop him from reaching the Super Bowl. Even though they were eliminated in the Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, the Raiders enjoyed a successful 2016 season with a 12-4 record.

The Raiders have completely turned their franchise around in the past two years and have become one of the best teams in football. However, an unforeseen injury derailed thier plan of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 2002. These are some of the highs and lows of the Raiders 2016 season.

Season Grade - A

The Oakland Raiders have not had a winning record since 2002, but that streak was broken in 2016. The Raiders are one of the most feared teams in the AFC, rivaling the Patriots, Chiefs and the Steelers. If it wasn't for Carr's untimely injury, the Raiders could have made a huge playoff run. All in all, the Raiders had a succesful season and have the right tools to get back into the playoffs next season. The Oakland Raiders receive an "A" for their 2016 campaign.

Most Disappointing Player

One of Oakland's most disappointing players has to be free safety Reggie Nelson. Despite Nelson making the Pro Bowl this year, he was a liability for the defense. Nelson had a hard time stopping the run and defending passes and let a lot of plays get behind him. Even though he was named to the Pro Bowl, his stats were lackluster, as they are compareable to his rookie season's stats. The defense did have other liabilites besidesNelson, but he was a major reason why the Raiders had 20th ranked defense in the league.

Most Improved Player

For the Raiders, second year wide receiver Amari Cooper is their most improved player. Cooper had a great rookie season with 72 receptions for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns and one-uped himself in his sophmore campaign. While Cooper's touchdown total went down from last year, catching five this season, his receptions and yardage went up dramatically, catching 83 passes for 1,153 yards. In only two seasons, Cooper has broken the 1,000 yard mark and could join the ranks of Randy Moss, Mike Evans, John Jefferson and A.J. Green as the only receivers to gain over 1,000 yards in their first three seasons if he is able to replicate this year's performance.

Best Game of the Season

Oakland's best game of the season came against the New Orleans Saints in the first game of the season. The game was a shootout, with both teams scoring four touchdowns a piece. The game came down to the wire and was decied by a risky two-point conversion in the end, when Carr hit Michael Crabtree in the back corner of the endzone. This game set the tone for the rest of the season for the Raiders, and showed the rest of the  NFL what Oakland was capable of. In the first game of the season, Del Rio showed that he trusted his offense, Carr showed the league that he can bring his team back from the brink, and the Raiders showed that they were a resilient team that wouldn't quit. Though the defense did not play up to par, and they would not play up to par for a good part of the season, Carr and the offense gave Drew Brees and the Saints a run for their money.

Worst Game of the Season

The worst game of the season for the Raiders came in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts. While the Radiers were able to defeat the Colts, Indianapolis was able to derail Oakland's plans for a playoff run. Carr suffered a broken leg when he was sacked in the final quarter. With no reliable second string quarterback, the Raiders' playoff hopes were dashed two weeks before the Wild Card round. While the Raiders were one of the most feared teams heading into the postseason, it was Carr who kept the offense rolling. Once he was knocked out, the whole machine fell apart and the Texans were able to take them apart two weeks later in the Wild Card round.
