Genshin Impact will be arriving to the PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility

With the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X right around the corner, will the free-to-play game be coming to the next generation of consoles?

Developer MiHoYo revealed its plans for Genshin Impact version 1.1; the largest update to the free-to-play game yet is coming on November 11 and will add new quests, characters, and a seasonal event called "Unreconciled Stars." It will also add PS5 compatibility to the game, which is perfectly timed since the console will start hitting shelves the day after that.

miHoYo has now confirmed that its massively-popular Genshin Impact will be arriving to the PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility. While the game will run smoother with reduced load times and enhanced graphics on Sony’s upcoming next-gen console, being a backwards compatible title also means it won’t be able to make full use of the device’s upgraded specs, although the Chinese developer has not commented on whether the game will be getting a full-fledged PS5 version later on.

MiHoYo redefined expectations of free-to-play games when Genshin Impact hit the market. The game delivered a full-fledged AAA RPG experience, with free-to-play gacha elements that didn't hinder gameplay for the most part. Since its release last month, Genshin Impact has been "the biggest revenue generator on the App Store and Google Play," according to a Sensor Tower analyst. Having drawn in over US$245 million from mobile alone, MiHoYo is well-positioned to deliver a substantial revamp to the upcoming PlayStation 5 version.

Unfortunately, MiHoYo didn’t say when fans can expect the game to be available on PS5. One would assume they want it to be there as soon as possible to capitalize on the PS5’s launch but it’s also a live-service game, which means focusing on new content and regular updates is also a priority.
